Hunter’s Head Tavern in Upperville, VA is an English Pub with an outside patio that serves farm-to-table breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  They also offer afternoon tea.  Over the years I have had lunch, dinner, and brunch at the Tavern, visiting in my Vanson racing leathers while riding my Ducati, in cords and sweater during the cooler months, and in jacket and tie once.  With every visit, I have always been treated with the exact same level of attention by the Tavern’s staff.  My experience chatting with fellow patrons has been similar too, with folks in their shooting breeks, riding jodhpurs, or muck boots happy to strike up a conversation with dudes in full leather.  Everyone is on the same footing, which has not always been my experience elsewhere.  During the cooler months they tent and heat their dog friendly patio and during the warmer months the restaurant has some very pretty gardens for viewing.  Many ingredients are sourced from the area and from Ayrshire Farm, which owns the Tavern.

On a recent visit for lunch I had their pub greens with grilled chicken and an ice tea.  Dessert was home made vanilla ice cream.  The mesclun salad was very fresh, with a well rounded variety of greens, and the grilled chicken was cooked the way I enjoy it, with just a bit of char on the outside while still being tender and juicy on the inside. 

On an earlier visit I had their chicken pot pie with a side order of sautéed green beans.  The pie had big chunks of tender white meat, earthy russet potatoes, and bright peas in a light cream sauce.  The crust was tender and flaky, just as it should be.  The sautéed beans were just the right side of tender, flavorful and nicely seasoned with a bit of salt and pepper.  Dessert was their blackberry sorbet, which included a bit of port, and was very satisfying.

Sunday brunch is worth noting as well, with a visit that had me enjoying their farm eggs Benedict with ham, potatoes, and fruit.  Even during the very early spring months the fruit was tender, ripe, and full of flavor.  The potatoes, sautéed in butter, were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

One special note is their pub bread which they serve at the opening of a meal with some very fresh butter.  For me, the Tavern’s bread is a bit of a cross between artisanal Tuscan and sourdough loaves in texture and style, but with a flakier crust that is at once crisp yet soft in the mouth.

In the twenty or so times I have visited the Tavern the bread has always been the exact same experience.  As friends know, I often judge a restaurant by its bread as it is like a new handshake or opening a car door for the first time.  Impressions are made in these first steps and tough to overcome if the experience is poor.  The Tavern’s consistency is impressive. 

In short, the Tavern is well worth a visit as a destination or as you pass through Upperville, VA.  The roads around the village offer up great driving or riding opportunities with good signage and beautiful scenery and should not be missed.

Notes:
-Reservations on weekends are recommended.
-There is good gravel parking and there are a few areas with pavement for motorcycles.
-The patio is dog friendly.  Woof!
